Meet Celeste: Heart Patient to CrossFit Competitor and Boss Babe!

Celeste is an absolute warrior in every sense of the word. Physically, mentally and in the way she inspires those around her.

At just 18, Celeste began experiencing unexpected heart palpitations. After being rushed to the hospital it was discovered she had two heart conditions: Wolf-Parkinson-White syndrome and a hole in her heart. Brave beyond her years, at only 19 years old, she underwent two procedures (including open heart surgery) in just two days.

Her fight didn’t end there. Celeste continued to battle heart rhythm issues, undergoing three more procedures to manage atrial fibrillation. But the toughest blow came when her beautiful daughter, Ava, was born with the same condition, requiring heart surgery at just three years old.

Despite these huge challenges, both Celeste and Ava are now thriving and living life to the fullest. Heart disease remains a part of their lives, but they refuse to let it define them. In an incredible show of strength and bravery, just 4 months after her last surgery (in 2018), Celeste decided to push her limits by taking on a very physical challenge: entering a CrossFit competition! And her journey didn’t stop there; she went on to compete in multiple events, including the CrossFit Teams National Championship in 2019.

Celeste's grit and determination shine through and she is an inspiration to everyone around her.  Whilst she could be forgiven for taking things easy. She doesn’t. She has made fitness a huge part of her life and you will catch her most days (nearly every day!) at her gym in Nelson, or running her own business (Gelest Nails) and being an incredible mum, wife and friend.

What do you love about CrossFit?  The constant challenges that leads to continual growth, mentally and physically, regardless of what stage of your CrossFit journey you are at. The people and community. The overall health benefits.

What are your biggest achievements: Signing up for CrossFit and competing at Metcon Madness 4 months post heart surgery!

What advice would you give to other women who might be struggling with health/life setbacks:  Find a fitness community that you click with. Whether it's a gym, sports cub or fitness group, they will keep you honest and motivated! Believe in yourself and find strength in what you have already overcome. You are stronger than you think!

 Achievements and Milestones

Celebrating milestones, no matter how big or small, is vital in any fitness journey. Here are some ways to recognize your progress and stay motivated:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Break down your larger fitness goals into smaller, achievable steps. Celebrate each small victory along the way.
  2. Track Your Progress: Keep a fitness journal or use an app to track your workouts, nutrition, and how you’re feeling. Reflecting on your progress can be incredibly motivating.
  3. Reward Yourself: Treat yourself when you reach a milestone. It could be a new piece of workout gear, a relaxing spa day, or a fun outing with friends.

Empowerment Tips

Empowerment comes from within, but having a supportive community can make a world of difference. Here are some tips to help you feel empowered in your fitness journey:

  1. Find Your Tribe: Surround yourself with like-minded individuals who encourage and inspire you. Join a local fitness group, online community, or find a workout buddy.
  2. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Understand that everyone has off days, and it’s okay to rest and recharge.
  3. Stay Educated: Continuously learn about fitness and health. Knowledge is power, and understanding your body helps you make informed decisions about your workouts and nutrition.
