5 on the go breakfast ideas
Why is breakfast important?
Breakfast in the most literal sense, means the first meal of the day that involves breaking the overnight fast. It is often referred to as the most important meal of the day, and for good reason! It kickstarts your metabolism, provides you with solid energy to start your day and helps to improve concentration and focus.
For some of us, mornings can be a little crazy, so there is not a lot of time to make something nutritious (let alone sit down and eat it!). Or perhaps you're simply not ready to eat early in the morning. You may 'break your fast', later in the day.
Here are 5 quick and easy breakfast ideas that you can eat on the run or take with you to work. Three can be prepared the night before and two can be thrown together quickly in the morning.
1. Overnight oats
Prepare a batch of overnight oats the night before and wake up to a delicious and nutritious breakfast. Simply combine rolled oats, your choice of milk, a swirl of honey and your favorite toppings such as fruits, nuts, or seeds in a jar. Let it sit in the refrigerator overnight, and in the morning, you'll have a ready-to-eat breakfast that you can grab and go.
2. Smoothie bowls
Blend your favourite protein powder, frozen fruit, a liquid of your choice (almond/coconut milk or water), and a handful of spinach or kale to create a nutrient-packed smoothie. Pour the smoothie into a bowl and top it with muesli/granola, sliced fruits, and a drizzle of honey. It's a refreshing and filling breakfast option that you can enjoy on the go.
3. Greek yogurt with toppings
Greek yogurt is a high-protein breakfast option that couldn't be any easier. Simply grab a container, add Greek yogurt and top with your favorite toppings, such as chopped fruit/berries, chia seeds, muesli, nuts/seeds. You can also add a spoonful of protein powder, for an extra protein hit. It's a quick and easy breakfast that provides a good balance of protein, carbohydrates, and healthy fats.
My favourite is Chobani Greek Yoghurt which has a whopping 14g protein per serve!
4. Breakfast wraps
Prepare a batch of breakfast wraps in advance and store them in the freezer. Fill whole wheat tortillas or wraps with scrambled eggs, cooked veggies, and a sprinkle of cheese. Wrap them individually in foil and freeze. In the morning, simply heat one up in the microwave for a delicious and satisfying breakfast on the go.
5. Protein bars
When time is really tight, protein bars can be a convenient and nutritious breakfast option. Look for bars that are high in protein, low in sugar and made with whole grains and nuts. Avoid those that have a long list of ingredients! Keep a stash on hand for those mornings when you need a super quick option that you can just grab and go.
